Biography
Joey Maderal Canoy (born June 27, 1993) is a Filipino professional boxer who has competed in both the mini-flyweight and light-flyweight divisions. Nicknamed “The Babyface,” he is the current WBC International mini-flyweight champion since April 2025 and a former OPBF light-flyweight titleholder. Canoy has also challenged for the IBO world titles on three occasions.
Canoy turned professional at the age of 19, debuting with a unanimous decision win over Garry Rojo in 2012. Early in his career, he gained recognition with victories over regional contenders such as Toto Landero, while also experiencing setbacks against Jerry Tomogdan and Jesse Espinas. In 2015, he claimed the Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) mini-flyweight title, but later moved up in weight to challenge South African Hekkie Budler for the IBO light-flyweight crown in 2017, where he fell short via seventh-round stoppage.
After returning to the mini-flyweight division, Canoy fought world-level opposition, including bouts against Simphiwe Khonco and Nkosinathi Joyi for the IBO belt, though both opportunities ended in disappointment. He later revived his career with a resurgence at light-flyweight, winning the OPBF title in 2023 by knocking out veteran Kenichi Horikawa. By 2024, he had re-established himself as a contender, earning a spot in eliminator discussions against Alex Winwood and Ginjiro Shigeoka.
In 2025, Canoy captured the WBC International mini-flyweight title, defeating Vietnamese boxer Minh Phat Sam in General Santos City.
