Biography

Shokichi Iwata (岩田翔吉, born 2 February 1996) is a Japanese professional boxer who held the WBO light-flyweight title from 2024 to 2025.

Iwata began boxing in middle school after being inspired by Japanese MMA star Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto. As an amateur, he won multiple national youth tournaments and earned notable victories over future world champions Takuma Inoue and Kosei Tanaka. He later studied sports science at Waseda University before turning professional.

Iwata made his professional debut in California in 2018 and quickly rose through the ranks with his aggressive style and punching power. He captured the Japanese light-flyweight title in 2021 before unifying it with the OPBF and WBO Asia Pacific light-flyweight titles in 2022 after defeating veteran Kenichi Horikawa. That same year, he challenged Puerto Rican champion Jonathan González for the WBO world title but fell short on the scorecards.

He rebounded with knockout wins in 2023 and 2024 before finally claiming the WBO light-flyweight world championship in 2024. Iwata lost the belt in 2025 but remains regarded as one of Japan’s most dangerous contenders in the lower weight classes.
