The upcoming WBC convention in Bangkok (Nov. 30 – Dec. 4) will close with a fight that could add another chapter to Thailand’s boxing legacy. On December 4, Thailand’s Thammanoon Niyomtrong, better known as Knockout CP Freshmart, will attempt to become a two-weight world champion when he challenges Venezuela’s Carlos Cañizales for the WBC light flyweight title.
Niyomtrong (28-1, 11 KOs) held the WBA minimumweight belt for nearly a decade, making 11 defenses and notching victories over Wanheng Menayothin, Alex Winwood, and Roberto Paradero. His reign ended in Saudi Arabia last year in a unification loss to Oscar Collazo, but now at 35, he’s taking on a new challenge at 108 pounds.
Cañizales (28-3-1, 20 KOs) enters as champion after avenging his controversial 2024 defeat to Panya Pradabsri, stopping the Thai in five rounds this past May in Caracas. The Venezuelan has already shown he’s willing to travel for big fights, and his first defense will once again come on foreign soil.
The styles promise action. Both men are pressure fighters who like to close the distance and force exchanges. For Cañizales, it’s about leaving no doubts after his last trip to Bangkok ended in controversy. For Niyomtrong, it’s about seizing the moment at home, in front of his countrymen, with the WBC’s famous green belt on the line.
The fight also comes with added spectacle as it headlines the WBC convention, which will bring global boxing figures such as Terence Crawford, Katie Taylor, Roberto Durán, and Julio César Chávez to Thailand.
