Albuquerque flyweight Abraham “Hammer” Perez (11-0, 6 KOs) makes the biggest leap of his young career on July 12, swapping familiar New Mexico rings for the bright DAZN lights of the El Paso County Coliseum. Unbeaten at 11-0 (6 KOs), the 26-year-old meets rugged Mexican pressure fighter Angel Geovanny Meza Morales (9-3-3, 6 KOs) in what he calls “my toughest challenge yet.”
The bout is more than a road test; it’s a testament to survival. Last August, Perez nearly drowned during a pool workout, spending critical hours on an ECMO machine while doctors warned his parents of potential brain damage or limb loss from clotting. “Most people wouldn’t risk the ring after that,” Perez admits, “but impossible is a word we put on ourselves.”
That brush with mortality has sharpened his focus. Expect Perez to rely on a quick jab and nimble footwork to offset Meza Morales’ inside assault - tactics he has honed at Albuquerque’s 15th Round Boxing Gym. “I’ll have to work on the outside and be faster on my feet,” he says, eager to prove the hype is warranted.
