Anthony Joshua is weighing offers to fight in Ghana and Nigeria as part of his comeback plan, while keeping a long-awaited clash with Tyson Fury firmly in his sights for 2026. According to promoter Eddie Hearn, the former two-time heavyweight world champion has recovered from elbow surgery and could return to the ring later this year or early next.
Joshua has not fought since his knockout loss to Daniel Dubois at Wembley in September 2024. Hearn revealed that both Martin Bakole and Deontay Wilder are under consideration as potential opponents, though a fight against either would mark a demanding return after an 18-month layoff. “It’s been a really frustrating period,” Hearn told ESPN. “But when I saw him in Dubai, I could see he still wants it - he really wants to become a three-time world heavyweight champion. That’s his motivation.”

The promoter also confirmed that approaches from African promoters have been made, and Joshua is enthusiastic about staging a fight on the continent. “We’ve had an approach from Ghana, and now Nigeria,” Hearn said. “AJ fighting in Africa would be incredible. It’s something he’s always wanted to do before retiring.”
At the same time, Hearn reiterated that Joshua’s ultimate goal remains a blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury, who has not fought since losing a second consecutive decision to Oleksandr Usyk. Talks for Joshua vs. Fury have circulated for years but have yet to materialize. Hearn said discussions with Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, could finally make the dream fight happen. “Turki is probably the only one who can make it,” Hearn noted. “Both guys will want huge money, and he has a plan that includes the Fury fight. It’s the biggest fight in the sport, no question.”
Despite speculation that Joshua’s career may be entering its final stretch, Hearn insists his fighter remains motivated and focused. “He wants to fight, he wants to be active,” Hearn said. “When I told him he probably has another 18 months, he said, ‘Why are you putting a number on it?’ He’s ready - and he wants Tyson Fury.”
