WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios has cast doubt on Ryan Garcia’s readiness for a title shot when he returns in 2025. Barrios told the press he's unsure if Garcia, who recently tested positive for a banned substance, deserves the opportunity, suggesting that Garcia should prove himself in a few fights before vying for the title.
Barrios addressed Garcia's potential future title shot, saying, *"If he comes back, cleans up, and continues to be successful, yeah, I would welcome a fight with him.”"*He also acknowledged that a bout with Garcia could generate considerable interest and revenue.

Barrios' recent title journey was unconventional; he became the full WBC champion by being elevated from interim champion status after defeating Yordenis Ugas. Despite the debate surrounding Garcia, Barrios admitted that Garcia's skillset is impressive, though he emphasized the importance of clean competition: "As fighters, we’re putting our lives on the line. I think it shows more about your character than whatever it is you’re popping up dirty for."
As Barrios prepares for his upcoming defense, the future remains uncertain. With potential challengers like Garcia, Devin Haney, and even Regis Prograis looming, Barrios’ 2025 could hold bigger opportunities - or tougher challenges - than his current title defense.
