Talk of Gervonta “Tank” Davis slipping quietly into retirement has gathered pace in social media since the WBA lightweight champion’s majority-draw title defence against Lamont Roach in March and, more recently, his arrest on a misdemeanour domestic-violence charge. A scheduled August rematch with Roach in Las Vegas never materialised, social-media speculation in the last few days swirled that the 29-year-old had lost his appetite for the sport, and whispers grew louder when Davis himself had previously floated the idea of quitting by the close of 2025.

On Tuesday, long-time team member and co-trainer Kenny Ellis moved to quash the chatter with a short, snappy dismissal on X:

“Per usual FAKE news.”

Ellis’ post is the first comment from inside the Baltimore star’s camp since rumours of an immediate retirement began circulating. It follows Davis’ turbulent few months: the unexpectedly tight fight with Roach at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center — where he even took an unscored knee in round nine before salvaging a 115-113, 114-114, 114-114 majority draw — and legal troubles that have cast fresh doubt over his return timetable. The drawn verdict left Davis 30-0-1 (28 KOs) and extended Roach’s own hopes of lifting a world title, but contractual plans for a summer sequel have stalled amid the champion’s off-ring issues.
