Yesterday, Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena featured bouts with some of the most talented fighters. Headlining the event was a bout between the undisputed female middleweight champion Claressa Shields (14-0, 2 KOs) and the formidable Maricela Cornejo (16-6, 6 KOs).
Eventually, Claressa Shields, the undisputed female middleweight champion, emerged victorious over Maricela Cornejo, claiming a unanimous shutout victory over 10 rounds. The judges scored 100-89, 100-90, and 100-90 in Shields’ favor.
In the co-main event of the night, Ardreal Holmes Jr (14-0, 5 KOs) and Wendy Toussaint (14-2, 6 KOs) battled fiercely for the vacant IBF USBAA 154-lb title. The eight-round technical decision favored Holmes Jr, scoring 77-74, 76-75 while Toussaint got 77-74. A rabbit punch in the fourth round led to a point being deducted from Toussaint, and a head clash in the eighth round resulted in a severe cut on his forehead. Despite the ringside doctor’s approval to continue, referee Gerald White halted the bout due to significant blood loss. The fight then proceeded to the scorecards. Holmes, despite hailing from nearby Flint, Michigan, received boos from the audience as he was announced the winner.
In the undercard, Joseph Hicks (7-0, 5 KOs), an unbeaten middleweight prospect, also had a great night, securing an easy unanimous decision over Antonio Todd (14-8, 8 KOs) in an eight-round fight for the WBC Americas silver 160-lb title. All three judges scored the bout 80-72 in favor of Hicks.
