Mexican boxing is in mourning following the tragic death of Jesus Ivan Mercado Cabrera, whose body was discovered wrapped in a blanket near the U.S. border. Authorities confirmed the 21-year-old fighter was found in a desert area between Sonora and Baja California, not far from San Luis Río Colorado, where he had recently moved to continue his career.

Mercado Cabrera, known as “Rafaguita”, had been reported missing before his body was located after reports of a suspicious package on the roadside. He was later identified by his distinctive tattoos. Local outlets report that while no obvious signs of physical violence were found, police are treating the case as a suspected homicide.

A local search group that had been assisting his family released a statement confirming the identification. “The young man who was found dead has been identified by his relatives, who will begin the necessary procedures to give him a Christian and dignified burial. RIP Jesus Ivan Mercado Cabrera,” the message read.

Despite a modest professional record of 7-9-1 from 17 bouts, Mercado Cabrera was regarded as a promising talent and had begun to build recognition within Mexican boxing circles. Originally from Nogales, he relocated to San Luis Río Colorado with the hope of advancing his career.

Tributes poured in on social media from fans and friends. One mourner wrote, “Rest in power young king.” Another added, “May you rest, fierce warrior, champ.”

The news compounds a devastating week for the sport, coming just days after British boxing legend Ricky Hatton was found dead at age 46.
