Biography
Richard Commey, born on March 10, 1987, in Accra, Ghana, is a professional boxer standing 5 feet 8 inches tall with a reach of 71 inches. Throughout his career, he has participated in several significant bouts. In September 2016, he contended for the vacant IBF lightweight title against Robert Easter Jr. but was narrowly defeated by split decision. In March 2018, Commey secured a title opportunity by achieving a sixth-round knockout victory over Alejandro Luna. He capitalized on this chance in February 2019 by capturing the IBF lightweight title with a second-round knockout of Isa Chaniev. However, in December 2019, he lost the title to Teofimo Lopez via a second-round technical knockout. In December 2021, Commey faced Vasiliy Lomachenko and was defeated by unanimous decision. Most recently, in March 2023, he fought against Jose Carlos Ramirez but suffered a loss.
Technical Overview
Commey’s fighting style is a technical marvel, defined by his extraordinary head movement, reminiscent of Neo dodging bullets in The Matrix. His head movement is not limited to the typical side-to-side motion but also incorporates vertical and diagonal shifts, making him unpredictable and difficult to target. As he moves his head, he is always prepared to come back up and follow through with sharp counterpunches, making his defensive maneuvers a seamless part of his offensive strategy.
Physically, Commey is durable and capable of withstanding a tremendous amount of punishment. His resilience in the ring allows him to press forward, even in grueling exchanges. He excels at creating space by pushing off his opponents and catching them as they attempt to exit the pocket. This ability to control the distance and capitalize on transitions is one of his standout attributes.
Commey is particularly skilled at forcing openings through subtle movements. Whether it’s pushing forward to create angles or slightly retreating to bait his opponent into overextending, he forces his adversaries to fight cautiously. His ability to set traps and counter like a precision fencer adds a strategic depth to his approach. Once he’s created the opening, he unleashes powerful, fluid combinations with devastating accuracy.
