Biography
Maricela Cornejo, born on April 16, 1987, in Prosser, Washington, is an American professional boxer with a reach of 72 inches, making her a formidable opponent in the ring. Standing at 5 feet 10 inches tall, Cornejo has competed in both the super middleweight and middleweight divisions, earning recognition for her achievements and her willingness to face some of the toughest opponents in women’s boxing.
In 2015, she captured the WBC International Female Super Middleweight title with a victory over Latashia Burton at Mana Studios in Miami, Florida. This significant achievement marked the beginning of her rise in the sport. Eight months later, Cornejo fought for the vacant WBC World Female Middleweight title against Kali Reis at The Trusts Arena in Auckland, New Zealand. Although she lost the bout by a controversial split decision, she made history by being part of the first major world title fight held in New Zealand.
Cornejo is widely respected for her fearless approach to the sport, taking on elite fighters such as Claressa Shields and Franchón Crews-Dezurn. Her contributions to boxing have helped shape an era that may one day be remembered as the “Four Kings” period of women’s boxing.
Technical Overview
Cornejo is known for her classic “swarmer” style, a type of fighter who applies constant pressure to her opponents. This style is difficult to master, requiring not only excellent form but also immense stamina to maintain the relentless pace. She excels at getting on the inside and punishing her opponent with quick, aggressive combinations. The hallmark of her approach is her ability to close the distance and overwhelm her opponents with a barrage of punches, forcing them into defensive positions.
However, Cornejo doesn’t simply rush in blindly; she has a strategic use of her range and footwork, carefully setting up her attacks. While her swarm is reminiscent of the classic Mexican style of boxing—emphasizing volume and constant aggression—she also knows how to control the distance, using her jab to set up her onslaughts. Her boxing IQ allows her to read the ring and adapt to her opponent’s movements, maintaining pressure without sacrificing her defense.
She combines her swarming style with resilience, often pushing forward despite taking shots. Her conditioning is a key strength, allowing her to maintain a high pace throughout the fight. Cornejo’s body punching and relentless attack wear down her opponents, gradually breaking their will as the rounds progress. Her ability to throw punches in volume while staying tough under fire makes her a difficult opponent for any boxer in her weight class.
